Rosetta@home: this project uses people's computers around the world to analyze proteins to help find the cures for cancer and other illnesses/diseases. You can run it as a screensaver, and the combined power of all the computers being used dramatically speeds up the process of finding a cure. OK, I might not be describing it correctly.
